I'm the newest member of Ghost in the House!

Though their Edgetone Records web site hasn't been updated yet, I can confirm that I'm officially the band's newest member.  I will be playing bass flute.  I have always admired their haunting, abstract and atmospheric music, their candlelit stage arrangements, and their work with butoh dancer Kinji Hayashi, so joining them is an honor and a blessing.  I hope you'll come see me perform with them early in 2013.

pOWER jAM is what I am!

I had a great time playing in Moe! Staiano's Long Annual Rock Lotto.  This is the band I was randomly assigned to -- pOWER jAM.  There are 3 umlauts over the W, just to make sure you spell it right.

Interview of me in Fenderhardt

There is a very fine arts blog known as Fenderhardt and I am interviewed in it about the Outsound New Music Summit coming up this week.  I've run across people who didn't believe graphic scores were "real"...well, they are, and they will be an integral part of night 2 of the Summit.  And in this interview, we uncover some of their inner workings.

I'm going to New York City with Theatre of Yugen...

...and we need your support to get me there.  Travel funding, specifically.  I would deeply appreciate anything you can contribute.  Click on the widget over there on the right, to go to my personal fundraising page for the tour.  There you can view a video trailer for the play, Cordelia, which we'll be performing three times at the La Mama theater in NYC.  And also a personal video message from me.  Every little bit helps!  Thank you ever so much.

My role in a world premiere on July 19th

The 2012 Outsound New Music Summit is coming up soon.  The Thursday night concert on July 19th, "The Composer's Muse", is my curation and consists of world premieres by Christina Stanley, Matthew Goodheart, and John Shiurba.

After everything was all confirmed John asked me to be the flutist and vocalist in his new work, 9x9.  Here's from his description: "The score will utilize nine different types of notation all of which are somehow derived from the newspaper, so the piece acts as a celebration and/or elegy for the old-fashioned print medium. The notation types will vary from standard music notation to graphic, textual and pictorial notation, allowing the ensemble some creative input in the interpretation. The form of the suite will be open, allowing the conductor and the players to spontaneously shape the way the music develops in real time."

The other piece of mine which ALRY has released

Back in March of 2008, the Flock of Flutes in Walnut Creek, California performed my arrangement of the Fantaisie by Georges Huë, which they'd commissioned me to arrange for solo flute and flute choir.  They also had me arrange another Fantaisie, by Georges Enesco.  Both pieces were meant to showcase the talents of the winners of their Young Artist competition.

Both pieces now have been accepted by ALRY Publications.  The Huë Fantaisie has been released and is now available for purchase by flute choirs everywhere.  Click here to see the ordering page.

New release day at ALRY Publications

I'm proud to be able to say I'm a part of it.  My piece Penelope for a solo piccolo player, commissioned and premiered by Amy Likar back in 2010, is now available to anyone who'd like to challenge themselves with (1) portraying Molly Bloom from James Joyce's Ullysses, and (2) navigating a score with a line each for piccolo, voice, and steps!  Click here to view the ordering page.

If you miss it, it's OK because it will be archived.

Tom Nunn and David Michalak playing skatchboxes in trios with various Bay Area improvisers.

Here we are in a break from recording sessions.  Thanks very much to Larry's lovely wife Angela for the photo!  We are on Facebook, by the way...

Recording sessions have begun

It's been a long time coming, but Reconnaissance Fly, all five of us, reported to the studio yesterday for a pre-production meeting and the beginning of sessions for our debut album, Flower Futures.  We created instrumentation lists for all the songs, set up our sessions schedule for the coming months, listed all our gear, and had esoteric discussions about digital audio.  Then we set up the studio enough so we could rehearse the first pair of songs on the list.  We begin tracking today.  It's really exciting to have this finally underway.
